KSM-66® Ashwagandha Mode of Action
Clinically, it has been found that KSM-66 produces 98.9% reduction in post exercise build-up of serum creatine kinase levels indicating less degree of muscle damage. Thus, helping athletes recover after working out and during continuous activity repetition. Athletes have also observed increased cardiorespiratory endurance, improved max resistance load and muscle recovery, while also offering stress relief benefits.
- Treatment with the root extract of Ashwagandha resulted in a significantly greater increase (P <0.0001) in mean VO2max at week 8 and week 12 compared to placebo subjects1.
- Ashwagandha was shown to improve all subdomains of the QOL (physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environmental factors) of the healthy athletic adult subjects as compared to placebo1.
- In terms of energy production, ashwagandha can have beneficial effects on mitochondrial energy levels and functioning and reduce the activity of the Mg2+ -dependent ATPase enzyme responsible for the breakdown of ATP and can increase creatine levels that can in turn lead to ATP generation.
- It has been shown that Ashwagandha increased both the red blood corpuscles (RBC) and hemoglobin count. The increase in RBC results in an increased capacity of the blood to transport oxygen directly to the exercising muscles; thus, enhancing the aerobic capacity of the athletes. These findings suggest a possible mechanism of the ergogenic effect of Ashwagandha root extract3.
- The increases in muscle strength were statistically significantly greater in the ashwagandha group than in the placebo group, for the upper body and the lower body3.
- For muscle size the increases are significantly greater in the ashwagandha group than the placebo group in the arm and chest3.
- Serum cortisol levels: a statistically significant (p<0.05) decrease of 22.2% was observed in serum cortisol (a stress hormone) levels as a result of KSM-66 Ashwagandha supplementation, significant when compared to the placebo,.
- Ashwagandha is seen as a GABA-mimetic that reduces over-excitation of neurons, thereby producing calmness, reducing stress and increasing focus, mental well-being and self-control4,5.
- Treatment with Ashwagandha can be helpful in limiting stress-associated weight gain in humans4,5.
MEMORY AND COGNITION
- Ashwagandha is seen to facilitate choline production in the body, which in turn influences key memory processes4,.

- Treatment with the Ashwagandha root extract resulted in a highly significant (? < 0.0001) increase in sperm concentration after 90 days of therapy, as compared to the baseline value on Day 0 of the study period9.
- Serum testosterone increased significantly by 17% and LH by 34%, following treatment with Ashwagandha root extract, as compared to the baseline9.
